Henry Nana Boakye, the national organiser of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has deemed the petition from a group known as the Patriotic Movement for Bawumia regarding the selection of Energy Minister Matthew Opoku Prempeh as unnecessary.
The pro-NPP group argues that Opoku Prempeh may face challenges in garnering grassroots support due to past public statements that have not resonated well with the public.
Comprising grassroots members, polling station agents, and constituency and regional executives, the group has expressed disapproval of Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the running mate, citing concerns about his perceived lack of humility and his recent comments on the country’s power crisis.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (2 July), Boakye dismissed the group, stating,
I think we need to disregard them. These individuals are not recognized within the party, and I don’t believe they merit discussion on any platform. When there’s a new presidential candidate and a new running mate is chosen, dissent is to be expected. Some dissent may be public, while others may express it privately. However, what everyone must demonstrate throughout this process is unwavering support for the presidential candidate.
