SSNIT CONTRIBUTORS WILL RECEIVE FREE NHIS RENEWAL, AND DR. BAWUMIA AIMS TO EXPAND COVERAGE UNDER THE SCHEME – AHIAGBAH

Richard Ahiagbah, the Director of Communication for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s flagbearer, will make significant efforts to enhance the scope of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and improve health outcomes for the people of Ghana.

This statement is particularly relevant as the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has recently declared that individuals who contribute to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) will no longer be required to pay registration and renewal fees for the NHIS.

In a recent post on his X platform, he made mention of…

The National Health Insurance Authority has eliminated the registration and renewal fees for NHIS subscribers who are SSNIT contributors. This means that SSNIT contributors will now be automatically enrolled in the scheme using their Ghana Card PIN without paying any fees.

This move is expected to extend healthcare access to an additional 1.3 million Ghanaians who are SSNIT contributors but are not yet part of the health insurance scheme. Bawumia’s Bold Solutions will do even more to deepen coverage under the scheme and health outcomes for Ghanaians. This is not only a possibility; it’s a certainty!

During a speech to employees from the Eastern, Oti, and Volta Regions, Dr. Da-Costa Aboagye, the Chief Executive, announced that the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has eliminated processing fees for SSNIT contributors.

This decision was made in order to facilitate the integration of this category and expand the Scheme. Dr. Aboagye further elaborated on his four-point vision to enhance the attractiveness of the Scheme to all taxpayers.

This vision includes increasing active membership, promoting a healthier lifestyle among the population, and reducing the overall cost burden of the Scheme over time.

He emphasized that the current focus on paying for curative services alone is not a sustainable approach for managing Ghana’s largest social intervention Scheme.
