Brigitte Dzogbenuku, the 2020 Presidential Candidate for the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), has characterized the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) suggestion for a 24-hour economy as a superficial slogan.
In a report published by myjoyonline.com on Thursday, September 5, 2024, she called on political leaders to prioritize essential matters such as security, transportation, and fuel before embarking on ambitious economic initiatives like establishing a 24-hour economy.
Promises and sloganeering are the bane of us. That is what has brought us to where we are. Promises and sloganeering without proper implementation are what have brought us where we are. I think it’s just a slogan. I don’t think it would make a huge difference.
We are talking about a 24-hour economy. Can we talk about security first? Can that be put in place, our transport, and our fuels, there are so many basic things that need to be put in place for this to work. So, let’s not be fuelled with sloganeering.
John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has articulated that the aim of his proposed 24-hour economy initiative is to facilitate the operation of businesses in three shifts each day.
He emphasized that achieving this objective will require a partnership between the government and the private sector.
The 24-hour economy is designed to create new employment opportunities, particularly for young people, address unemployment, and enhance living standards in Ghana.
