In a startling disclosure, Martin Ayisi, the Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, has unveiled the involvement of former President John Dramani Mahama in the mining sector of Ghana.
Ayisi indicated that former President Mahama authorized a greater number of small-scale mining licenses compared to the current President, Nana Akufo-Addo, igniting a vigorous discussion regarding the oversight and governance of the industry.
While presenting a document to the Government Assurances Committee of Parliament, Ayisi underscored that the increase in licenses issued during Mahama’s administration has played a significant role in the current challenges confronting the mining sector.
The increased number of licenses has led to environmental degradation and social issues.
The CEO of the Minerals Commission emphasized the importance of implementing responsible mining practices and enhancing oversight to ensure that small-scale mining operations do not negatively impact the environment and local communities.
We must strike a balance between economic benefits and environmental protection.
Martin Ayisi also rejected the proposals to suspend the issuance of new mining licenses, contending that such a measure would worsen the existing crisis of illegal mining.
If licenses are not granted, individuals will resort to illegal mining, also known as galamsey.
