THE NDC 24-HOUR BANKING PROPOSAL REPRESENTS A REGRESSION – RICHARD AHIAGBAH

Richard Ahiagbah, the Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed skepticism regarding a viral video that advocates for a proposal by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to have banks operate 24 hours a day.

In a post on X, Mr. Ahiagbah questioned the feasibility of this initiative, pointing out that modern banking already offers round-the-clock services through Automated Teller Machines (ATMs), online banking, and Mobile Money (MoMo).

He noted that ATMs and online banking allow customers to access their accounts at any time, thereby diminishing the necessity for physical banking locations.

Mr. Ahiagbah also underscored the advantages of MoMo transactions, which have been enhanced through financial interoperability initiatives led by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, ensuring that users have continuous access to services.

Furthermore, he urged the NDC to clarify whether they had engaged with banks regarding the practicality of such a proposal, suggesting that financial institutions might be reluctant to adopt a 24-hour operation when current technologies sufficiently satisfy customer needs.

In his remarks, he characterized the NDC’s proposal as a “reset to the Stone Age,” contrasting it with Dr. Bawumia’s vision of utilizing artificial intelligence, big data, and the Internet of Things to create new opportunities for the youth of Ghana.

Ahiagbah asserted that the NDC’s stance demonstrates a lack of understanding of the current landscape of banking and technological progress.
