The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Caucus in Parliament is actively seeking to engage Cynthia Mamle Morrison, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Agona West, and Kwadjo Asante, the MP for Suhum, who have expressed dissatisfaction regarding various matters related to the party’s parliamentary primaries in their respective constituencies.
Both incumbent MPs were unable to secure the NPP’s endorsement to run for Election 2024 under the party’s banner. Consequently, they have decided to pursue the 2024 parliamentary elections as independent candidates in their constituencies.
This decision to run independently has resulted in a standoff within Parliament, following the Speaker’s declaration last week that their seats, along with two others, were vacant due to cross carpeting, in accordance with Article 97 of the Constitution.
The other two vacant seats belong to Fomena, represented by Andrew Asiamah Amoako, the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, and Amenfi Central, held by Anthony Ackah of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In an interview with Graphic Online’s parliamentary correspondent, Nana Konadu Agyeman, on Tuesday, October 21, 2024, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the leader of the NPP caucus in Parliament, confirmed that while the NPP is currently facing challenges, efforts are being made to restore unity within the party.
However, Mr. Afenyo-Markin noted that the process of reconciling with those who have distanced themselves from the party is still ongoing.
