Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is set to commission two landmark projects in Walewale, located in the North East Region, on Friday, November 22. These include the Walewale Watermelon Factory and a newly constructed mosque for the local Muslim community.
In 2019, Dr. Bawumia laid the foundation stone for the Walewale Watermelon Factory, which is part of the government’s One District, One Factory initiative. The factory is a subsidiary of Champion Food and Beverages Limited, a Ghanaian-owned company. Once fully operational, it is expected to produce approximately 10 metric tons of watermelon and a range of fruit juice beverages daily. The factory aims to create numerous job opportunities for locals in this watermelon-producing town, while also helping to reduce post-harvest waste.
Alongside the factory, Dr. Bawumia will also commission the newly built Walewale Central Mosque, a project he played a key role in facilitating. The mosque, which features gender-specific worship spaces and offices, is designed to meet the growing needs of worshippers in the region.
The commissioning of the mosque is particularly significant as it coincides with the Friday Jummah prayers, and the event will be attended by traditional leaders, Imams, and worshippers from Walewale and nearby communities.
