WE’LL UPGRADE DIPLOMA TRAINEE NURSES AND MIDWIVES TO DEGREE HOLDERS – NAPO

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Vice-Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has revealed plans to upgrade Nursing and Midwifery Colleges in Ghana that currently award diplomas to institutions that will confer degrees.

This initiative, under the leadership of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is intended to replicate the NPP government’s earlier transformation of Teacher Training Colleges into degree-awarding institutions.

Dr. Prempeh, commonly known as “Napo,” stated that the proposed upgrade would ensure all trainee nurses and midwives graduate with degrees, enhancing their professional value and significantly improving their service conditions.

He shared these plans during a speech to trainee nurses and midwives at the Komfo Anokye Nursing and Midwifery Training College in Kumasi’s Bantama Constituency on Monday, 2nd December 2024, as part of his campaign tour.

Dr. Prempeh also assured the trainees that there would be ample employment opportunities after their studies, particularly with the government’s Agenda 111 hospital project, which aims to complete all hospitals under this initiative by June of next year. These hospitals are expected to create over 70,000 job opportunities for nurses and midwives.

Additionally, he warned against voting for John Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), claiming they would cancel the trainee allowances that the NPP government had reinstated. He also suggested that the NDC would abandon the ongoing Agenda 111 hospital projects, drawing comparisons with the NDC’s discontinuation of the Eurojet hospitals during President Kufuor’s administration in 2008.

A John Mahama presidency will mean a second cancellation of your trainee allowance and a discontinuation of all the Agenda 111 hospitals we are building across the country.

Their track record of halting NPP-initiated projects is well known, so we cannot afford to bring them back

He warned.
