Describing the accusations as “infantile,” Mr. Antwi-Boasiako asserted that these claims are a desperate attempt to justify an expected election loss.
The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako (‘Wontumi’), has dismissed allegations by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) claiming that Brigadier General Michael Opoku, the General Officer Commanding Central Command of the Ghana Armed Forces, has been assigned to rig the 2024 elections in favor of the ruling party.
At a press conference on Tuesday, November 19, the opposition party called for the immediate removal of the army chief, arguing that he should not be involved in the security arrangements for the upcoming 2024 general elections.
A person like him has no place in the current environment where Ghanaians are calling for violence-free elections. Given his history, we call for his immediate removal from his position as GOC of the Central Command
Sammy Gyamfi, the Communications Officer of the NDC.
The NDC wants to warn Brigadier-General Michael Opoku and his allies in the New Patriotic Party that they are being closely monitored and will remain under our watchful eye. This time, they will not succeed. Violence will not and cannot secure victory for the NPP in this year’s election.
Mr Gyamfi warned.
Mr. Antwi-Boasiako dismissed the claims as “infantile,” stating that such accusations are a desperate attempt to rationalize an expected election loss.
The NDC is not campaigning vigorously in the Ashanti Region,” he said. “Instead, they are sitting in the comfort of their homes and offices, devising strategies to blame the NPP for election rigging. Meanwhile, the NPP is working tirelessly as though we are in opposition
He highlighted that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s flagbearer, has almost finished touring all 276 constituencies in Ghana, with just two left to visit. In comparison, former President John Mahama, the NDC’s flagbearer,
The NDC’s allegations are a pre-emptive excuse for their impending loss. We don’t need any army officer to rig the election in our favour
he said, adding that the police and army are necessary only to maintain order and address potential violence from NDC members allegedly training under retired Commissioner of Police, Kofi Boakye.
Wontumi reaffirmed his confidence in the NPP’s prospects, crediting the party’s hard work and effective policies for its success.
